Africa is a vast place with many areas still completely undiscovered. In this post we highlight five of the most remote places in Africa for a luxury safari. The more famous safari areas of Africa (such as the Masai Mara and Okavango Delta) have become quite crowded, although you can still take a luxury safari in private conservancies which border these areas, which do still offer a very high level of exclusivity and a privacy when it comes to game viewing. There are however some other areas of Africa, which just are remote, wild and untouched and we are going to touch on five of these remote luxury safari locations:

1 The Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

These vast salt pans are lunar like and completely enchanting. The beauty of this remote region is breath taking and the emphasis here is on the freedom to explore as you wish. There are a few luxurious safari camps which all have access to the ancient San bushmen tribe, who’s tracking and botanical knowledge is nothing less than fascinating. Here you can also gallop across the pans on a riding safari, or take quad bikes to sleep under the dewless night sky. The absolute highlight is meeting the habituated meerkats which will happily use you to get a better view of their surroundings.

2 Wolwedans, Namibia

This huge conservancy in the NamibRand Nature Reserve is absolutely stunning and offers the very best off the beaten track safari experience, if it’s desert you’re looking for then look no further. The huge dunes, vast plains and desert adapted species make this a fascinating experience. This area has also been named Africa’s first Dark Sky Reserve, so good is the star gazing there. Wolwedans is a long six hour drive from Windhoek or a short flight, which only goes on to re emphasise its remoteness.

3 Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa

We don’t usually mention particular lodges in these round ups but this reserve had to get a mention, it is literally in the middle of no where in South Africa and offers a wonderfully romantic Kalahari experience complete with meerkats and black maned Kalahari lions. It is the sheer size of the vistas here and the ever changing colours which are really enchanting. This lodge is about ten hours from a city and requires a two hour flight to get there – bliss!

4 Katavi, Western Tanzania

Katavi represents Africa as it must have been over fifty years ago. Nothing can compare to the huge herds of buffalo which roam the plains, the masses of hippo in the rivers and the predators around every corner. Combine this with the fact there are only a handful of luxury safari camps and you have the ideal safari location – apart from the fact it take a good three hours by light aircraft. It really is worth it as this is definitely Africa’s top safari location when it comes to abundant game, beautiful scenery and no people. Here you can walk, fly camp and take day and night game drives.

5 Meru, Kenya

Meru in Kenya is lesser known compared to other more famous Kenya safari areas, but this area which was made famous by George and Joy Adamson who released Elsa the lion here, has so much to offer. Again there are very few camps and the scenery is unusual with red earth, doum palms, rivers and open plains. The game viewing is very exclusive due to the few camps located here and there are high rocky outcrops which offer the perfect views over the bush.
