How to protect your gadgets whilst traveling

Laptops, tablets, mobile phones, cameras … the list of gadgets we take with us when we’re on our travels goes on, and if you add up the cost of them in total, it’s quite an eye-watering amount. It’s always a good idea not to take too many valuables when moving around, but there are things you can’t possibly travel without, so with that in mind, how do you protect your gadgets from theft whilst you’re travelling? Well, here are a few ideas.

Prey Project – www.preyproject.com
You might have heard of this, but if you haven’t, this is basically an app that you download and it lets you keep a track of where your gadgets are, whether you are home or abroad. In the event of your laptop/tablet/phone etc being stolen, you are more likely to track it down and possibly retrieve it if you have an app such as this installed on that particular gadget.

Keep your gadgets to a minimum
We mentioned before that it’s a good idea not to take too many gadgets with you when you travel, so it’s a good idea to maybe look at investing in something that is multi-functional. For example, instead of traveling with a Kindle and a tablet, why not look at buying a Kindle Fire, which cuts the amount of gadgets in half, and combines the two together? Equally, some new laptops now comes with a tablet screen you can remove, which is another two in one kind of gadget.

Back everything up
This is protecting data rather than the actual gadget but it’s always a good idea to regularly back up your photographs and other important files onto a memory stick, which you keep separate to your laptop or tablet etc. This means that if you do happen to be unfortunate enough to have your gadget stolen, at least you won’t lose everything that is on it.

Insurance
Insuring your gadgets means you will have something to fall back on when it comes to replacing them. You need to check that your policy covers you for being overseas, but on the whole, provided you get adequate proof of the incident, e.g. a police incident report, and you pay your excess, you should be covered.

Don’t flaunt it
The saying ‘if you’ve got it, flaunt it’ does not apply here. If you have a gadget of any kind with you, even if you don’t think it’s particularly top of the range, don’t be tempted to flash it, or hold it in your hand as you’re walking down the streets. Phones and laptops aren’t as cheap in some countries as you can get them in your particular country, so they are certainly very sought after, and if you’re walking around with an imaginary neon sign over your head saying ‘look what I’ve got, come and get it’, then you’re opening yourself up to a possible problem and loss of your gadget altogether.

Common sense it what it comes down to really; you wouldn’t walk around waving your brand new iPhone at home, so certainly don’t do it when you’re travelling around. Make sure you keep everything you carry to a minimum, and keep them out of sight as much as possible. In the unfortunate event that you are a victim of theft, report it immediately.
